After three seasons in Houston, Aaron Holiday could leave the Rockets in free agency.

The 6-foot guard has been a steady backup during his time in Houston, but after the NBA draft, it seems unlikely that Holiday will re-sign with the Rockets. Houston took former Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton with the first pick in the second round of the NBA draft on Wednesday after trading up.
Also a 6-foot guard, Thornton offers a lot of the same qualities that Holiday does, and it seems unlikely that Houston will re-sign the pending unrestricted free agent with the former Buckeye now on the roster.
Rockets take 6-0 guard Bruce Thornton out of Ohio State with the 31st pick. 4-year player, turns 23 just before camp. 6-5 wingspan, shot 41.2% from three the past two seasons. Thornton spent four seasons with Ohio State, becoming the program's all-time leading scorer. In his senior season, he averaged 19.9 points per game and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 55.4% from the field and exactly 40% from deep.
The 22-year-old is capable of creating his own shot and is also a reliable playmaker, averaging 3.9 assists per game. When combined with his outside shooting, Thornton's skill set is very similar to Holiday's, but he has more upside on the defensive side of the ball.
Holiday has never averaged more than 0.5 steals per game during his time with the Rockets, while Thornton averaged 1.2 steals per game with the Buckeyes this season. The rookie has a much burlier frame than Holiday, outweighing him by over 40 pounds.
Above all, Thornton also has much higher upside than Holiday. Seven years younger than the 29-year-old Holiday, the rookie seems poised to take his spot on the roster, and Houston could opt to use that roster spot elsewhere.
