KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Lionel Messi is questioning how much longer he will continue playing soccer following the passing of his father, Jorge Messi.

In an emotional Instagram tribute post, Messi reflected on his father’s influence on his life and career, acknowledging he is unsure what the future looks like on the pitch.

Throughout Messi’s career, Jorge always had a constant presence, from taking his son to practice after work to later serving as his agent and advisor.
Messi said despite a few disagreements and arguments, Jorge was always right and things would always turn out the way he said they would.
Jorge is a big part of why Messi elected to participate in the 2026 World Cup, urging him to play and ultimately serving as a motivating factor.
“Once again you were right: I had to be there and play it,” Messi wrote.
Shortly before the tournament, Jorge’s health worsened. This would be the first time Jorge was unable to attend a tournament to support his son.
“I would tell you that we were going to reach the final so that you could travel,” Messi wrote.
Messi ultimately helped Argentina reach its second consecutive World Cup final, but would fall short 1-0 against Spain in extra time.
The absence of his father was something Messi noted to be difficult throughout the tournament as he was accustomed to hearing from Jorge after all his matches.
The loss has left Messi questioning his future within the sport.
“I only ever played football and now I have a lot of doubts that I’ll continue doing it for much longer,” Messi wrote.
Messi, however, did not announce his retirement, but left a sense of uncertainty for what’s to come.
Through his post, Messi’s message was a tribute to his father and a reflection on the role that Jorge played and will continue to play in his life.
“You’re always going to be present, especially in my sons’ education, because I teach them and educate them the same way you and mom did with me,” Messi wrote.
For now, the future of one of the all time greats remains uncertain.
Despite the uncertainty, Messi made it clear that his father’s influence will remain with him always.
